Der Begriff „Padparadscha“ stammt von „Padma Raga“ ab, was aus dem Sanskrit übersetzt „Lotusblume“ bedeutet. Sie ist die Nationalblume Indiens, das historisch Grenzen und Kultur mit Sri Lanka sowie anderen Ländern teilt. Padparadscha ist daher nach der Farbe der Blume benannt. In jüngerer Zeit wurde die Farbe von westlichen Gemmologen auch als „Sonnenaufgangsfarbe“ beschrieben.
