The Hampden Watch Company was one of the most significant American watch manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, founded in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1877 before relocating to Canton, Ohio in 1888 — becoming one of the defining names in American railroad-grade pocket watch production during the golden era of American horology. Hampden's watches were produced with the precision and reliability demanded by American railroad companies, whose strict timing standards — adopted following catastrophic accidents caused by inaccurate timekeeping — created a market for the highest-quality American-made pocket watches in the world. The Railway grade was Hampden's designation for movements meeting or exceeding railroad timing specifications, built to be accurate, shock-resistant, and legible under working conditions that would challenge lesser timepieces.
