Original authentic Atocha Coin 8 Reale Grade 2 unmounted coin with original Treasure Salvors Inc. certificate, signed by Mel Fisher himself. 

Grade 2 dictates that the coin was retrieved from the middle of the pack in the wreckage with less corrosion compared to Grade 3 or 4. The Potosi Mint signifies that the coin was minted in northern Peru, modern-day Bolivia.  

An 8 Reales silver coin was approximately equivalent to one month’s pay for a sailor in the 1600’s.

Sobre las monedas de Atocha

El 6 de septiembre de 1622, un barco llamado "Nuestra Señora de Atocha" del Reino de España, que transportaba oro, gemas y otros objetos de valor hacia El Nuevo Mundo, se hundió frente a la costa de Key West en Florida, hundiendo el tesoro durante cientos de años.

Todo esto cambió en 1969 cuando un equipo de buzos liderado por el cazador de tesoros estadounidense Mel Fisher comenzó a buscar en los fondos marinos de los Cayos de Florida el tesoro perdido. Después de una ardua expedición, se emitió una llamada de radio del hijo de Fisher, Kane Fisher, quien exclamó con júbilo que el equipo finalmente había encontrado el tesoro español.

En medio del descubrimiento invaluable, el gobierno del Estado de Florida reclamó la titularidad del naufragio, comenzando así una batalla legal que duraría ocho años. El 1 de julio de 1982, la Corte Suprema de EE. UU. falló a favor del equipo de Fisher y le otorgó los derechos sobre la totalidad del tesoro del naufragio.

En 2014, Nuestra Señora de Atocha fue añadida al Libro Guinness de los Récords Mundiales por ser el naufragio más valioso que se haya recuperado, ya que transportaba aproximadamente 40 toneladas de oro y plata y 71 libras de esmeraldas colombianas, entre otros artefactos.
