Introduced in 1962, the Rolex Submariner ref. 5513 became one of the longest-produced references in the Submariner collection, remaining in production until approximately 1989. Its no-date configuration, 40mm stainless steel Oyster case, rotating timing bezel, and automatic movement established many of the proportions associated with vintage Rolex diving watches.

The reference underwent several dial changes throughout its production, including the transition from glossy gilt dials to matte black dials during the 1960s. Earlier matte examples featured the “Meters First” depth-rating arrangement, displaying 200 meters before 660 feet, before Rolex transitioned to the later “Feet First” configuration.
